If you’ve joined the VAMP network you’ve probably been asked what your niche is. It may seem tedious, but it’s definitely important.
What is a Niche?
By definition, a niche is ‘A specialised segment of the market for a particular kind of product or service.’ This is traditionally a sales and marketing term though is essential to social media and here is why.
Social media plays a massive role in our day-to-day lives and for many has even become a full-time job. More and more people want to become content creators and may not know where to begin (up to 1.3 Million young people in the UK want to be social media creators). The best way to do this is to find your niche. Although finding your niche is arguably one of the most difficult parts of becoming a content creator, it's important for starting your journey. You don't want your content to seem so narrow that it only appeals to a small group of people or so broad that it almost confuses your audience. Instead, you want to be someone who people won't lose interest in and will recommend to others.
This process can get quite overwhelming, some people are fortunate enough to stumble upon something that works for them or that they can incorporate into their content creation, however, this rarely happens, especially if they want to maintain and expand their audiences over time.
Fret not, and see some of my advice below!
My main piece of advice is to not build your social media based on one VERY specific trend. Especially in today's day and age, social media is constantly moving so fast and once that trend dies out so will your social presence. I know I’m telling you to be specific in choosing your niche, but maybe not… too specific. Just like when starting any business you have to figure out what sets you apart from others in the same field as you. If you have a hobby of cooking and want to start a YouTube series, what will you do to stand out from all the other food content creators?
Here are some things to consider:
What are some things you love to do?
What are you really good at?
What distinguishes your content from the others?
What message do you want to put across?
Why would anyone be interested in seeing this?
For instance, Influencer Mariam Musa completely owned her unique styling videos and really hit the internet with something new and fresh, she found her niche and built her brand to what it is today!
The main thing to remember is to create your own identity and as cliche as it sounds, be you!
